Region: International Activity Type: Vacation Trip Place: Ehrwald, -

This route takes in all four mountain ranges converging on the Zugspitz Arena! As well as crossing the German border into Bavaria and exploring deeper into the wilder Wetterstein range.

We like to say that the routes cover the ‘best of’ parts, the ‘must-do’ trails and the hidden gems of the area! You can join us knowing that we are walking and seeing all that the Zugspitz Arena holds. We will cover a rich variety of terrain, encountering lakeside paths and woodland trails, high plateaus and rocky passes. We also give you the chance to climb Germany’s highest peak, the Zugspitze (9,717 feet), which sits on the border with Germany and neighbours the village of Ehrwald, where we start and end.

This varied and challenging trek visits the dramatic Hollentalklamm (‘Hell’s Valley’) gorge via a series of tunnels, bridges and engineered footpaths passing gushing waterfalls.  For the first and last nights of our trek, we will be accommodated in Ehrwald in the cosy and alpine Hotel Alpin, on a B&B basis.  For the nights along the trek we will be accommodated in mountain huts or working mountain farms, and one village hotel. Breakfast and dinner is included in the cost at all mountain huts. On the final day, we ascend the Zugspitze, Germany’s highest peak at 9,717 feet, with its impressive 360? views. A number of lifts, buses and a train are used during the week, which vastly increases the scope of the route and the areas we are able to access.

6 hiking days, 7 nights, self -guided trip. We carry our gear on our own from one hut to the next for this trek.

Add a couple days to travel to Ehrwald from the US and another couple days to return back to the US. We are looking at 11 days totals. We will be spending a couple nights in Munich. We will be flying out of Boston but can make arrangements to meet you in Munich either at the airport or hotel we book.

This trip is rated strenuous. The hikes range in length from 7-11 miles for 5-7 hours of hiking per day. The highest altitude is 9,717 feet. The greatest total daily ascent is 5,400 feet, and the greatest total daily descent is 3,638 feet. The ascent per day will range from 1,932 to 5,400 feet; descent per day will range from 948 feet to 3,638.

Adult: $763 [does not include airfare, transportation within the country, lunches and dinners in Ehrwald]. It also does not include a couple overnights in Munich. We may be able to reduce the cost further the more people that join us.

* Based on accommodation in dormitory style rooms in 4 mountain huts and private double rooms in 3 hotels/guesthouses. Kreuzeckhaus & Coburger Hütte offer the option to upgrade to a private room, subject to a supplement of $17 per person per night.

Hi Mike, I did the week in July 2018 with a German hiking club. They were all alpinists, it was good. Someday I'll do it again. This year I've been in Austria/EU from March till ....planning to go back in November. I changed my photo to the Zugspitz hike on the Austrian side of the mountain. Pete

We plan on leaving right after Labor Day weekend. It's less crowded in September.
