About a year and a half ago I began researching the most troublesome bugs and the effectiveness of the available repellents. The purpose of this was to make a more informed decision as to which repellents worked best and more importantly, to understand the limitations and potential risks of each repellent.
Last year I visited Italy. It's a special country with so many attractions that I don't know how to start writing about my trip.
For years, hikers only had three real options when it came to treating water in the backcountry: boil it, filter it, or add iodine. Now a broad array of weaponry is available to exterminate all the aquatic baddies looking to take up residence in your gut: bacteria, viruses, cryptosporidia, and especially parasitic enemy number one, giardia cysts.
For the "unofficial start to summer", 8 men who love the mountains spent a good part of their Memorial Day weekend giving back to the mountains which have given them so much, by working on the Smarts Brook Trail in Waterville Valley, NH. This trail, adopted by Gay Outdoors President Mike Boisvert and his partner Jon Normand, is a lesser-known way of ascending to the ridge between Sandwich Mountain and its little brother, Jennings Peak.
Our June Member of the Month!
Decades later, Southern friends tell me that I'm missing out—the barrier islands along the Gulf Coast are home to some of the last remaining historic Florida towns not ruined by development, and to some of the world's most beautiful beaches. To help me face my Florida fears 25 years after my last family trip, I recruit my Mexican boyfriend, Chef, a professionally trained cook, who demands that we eat well on the road.
Our canoe trip in 2008 to the Congaree National Park allowed us to paddle through the largest contiguous tract of old-growth bottomland hardwood forest in the U.S.
Mt. Potash fit our requirements perfectly on May 17, off the Kancamagus Highway, near Lincoln NH. It offers a great intro hike without any significant snow. The principal difficulty, if there was one, would come right in the beginning with the crossing of Downes Brook.
It was a perfect day for a low elevation hike to a backcountry pond, Lonesome Lake, that start’s from New Hampshire’s Franconia Notch on May 10. It’s a great location to snap photos of the Franconia Ridge and to introduce new guys to the wonders of New Hampshire’s White Mountains.
Just over fifteen years ago a small group of guys gathered to discuss organizing a group of gay men in Atlanta who shared the common love of outdoor activities.
For our last GO Gathering in New York we have a group campsite all to ourselves with a large party tent (including tables, chairs, large charcoal grill). It's being held again in Fahnestock State Park near Cold Spring from Friday, July 11th to Sunday, July 13th. This is our group BIG camping get-together and a great chance for you to meet new guys (or get reacquainted with old ones), try new activities and chat with all the guys you have got to know through GayOutdoors. Last year we had 40 gay campers, let's see what 2008 will bring!
I am sitting in today for Lineatus, who is out banding raptors. Lineatus asked me to write a diary about our Bird Explorers Project. This is a conservation and environmental education project created by my partner, Polish Chef, and I to promote birds and wildlife generally through digital photography with a particular focus on endangered species and species in very remote areas.
If you were on the trail for hundreds of days and thousands of miles, what would be your most cherished piece of gear? To help answer this question of packing priorities, we queried dozens of AT thru-hikers for their hard-won thoughts on the matter. Some answers you’d expect. Others may surprise you.
We had 12 people show up, from Novice first timers to seasoned ocean kayakers, from stubby kayaks to sleek composite ocean kayaks, plus we had one canoe manned by... canoeists! And good ones at that.
In late March, 24 souls looking to enjoy early spring, gathered for a hike at the Buck Hill Wildlife Management Area in Burrillville, RI. The group consisted of members from GO, Chiltern, and PRIOG (Providence Rhode Island Outdoors Group).
