Wilderness Network of Georgia Celebrates Fifteen years
By Tim Blackmore.
Just over fifteen years ago a small group of guys gathered to discuss organizing a group of gay men in Atlanta who shared the common love of outdoor activities.
The group was originally called the Outdoor Atlanta Sports Club. Later the name was changed to Wilderness Network of Georgia (WNG).
The first trips included a canoe trip through the Okefenokee Swamp and a backpack trip through Horsepasture in North Carolina as well as several others.
Since then, WNG members have organized over 1400 trips as far away as Alaska and Hawaii and as close as downtown Atlanta.
WNG recently celebrated their 15th year anniversary with a festive potluck and celebration.
About sixty members and visitors attended the celebration which included door prizes and recognition of original members.
The highlight of the evening was a slide show presentation by Dick Ambrose.
The show was a collection of pictures taken on WNG trips over the last fifteen years.
Set to gentle music, the slides showed the large diversity of trips that WNG members have led over the years.
It was a truly a remarkable show and one that will be remembered for many years to come.
