The Mazatzal Wilderness is the nation’s fifth largest federally-designated wilderness and covers a wide range of terrain, from desert to chaparral and ponderosa pine forests.
This dayhike samples some of the best trails of the Mazatzal Wilderness. Looping together the Y-Bar, Mazatzal Divide and Barnhardt Trails, we’ll orbit the summit of 7,901-ft of Mazatzal Peak.
This will be a strenuous hike, covering nearly 16 miles at a purposeful pace over rugged terrain, so this trip is suitable only for experienced hikers in very good condition. Though our adventure will keep us on established trails, we’ll cheerfully face the possibility of prickly vegetation and rattlesnakes fresh from hibernation. Because of the strenuous nature of this trip, the leader reserves the right to qualify participants. This is a consciously low-impact outing, so carpool participation is encouraged and participants are urged to contribute to their vehicle’s shared mileage costs.
This trip is strictly dependent upon a favorable weather forecast. A National Weather Service forecast of rain within 72 hours of our start will cancel or re-route this trip at the sole discretion of the leader, as will fewer than three confirmed signups as of 8:00pm, Thursday, March 28. Be sure to pack the Ten Essentials, lunch, and at least one gallon of water, since water sources along our route are not reliable. Our hike will begin at around 8:30am and take us about nine hours to complete, so plan on an evening return to Phoenix.
