The Welch-Dickey Hike is a 5 mile loop hike.  This trail is a great spring warmup hike.  It is among the first trails of the Whites to be clear of snow in spring.  It is also a

Driving directions to the location and spot to meet at:

From I-93 (north or south) take exit 28 (Campton/Waterville Valley).  Go east on Rt. 49, also known as the Mad River Road.  In about one mile you will get to the junction with Rt. 175.  You can't miss it, because there's a dam on your right, and some stores on your left (and Welch-Dickey is in the distance in front of you).  Stay on Rt 49 and continue going east.  In 4.5 miles turn left onto Upper Mad River Road (you'll cross the Mad River over a bridge).  Follow this road and in 0.7 mile turn right on Orris Road.  There is a brown "Welch-Dickey" sign with an arrow indicating to turn right.  In 0.6 mile turn right into the Welch-Dickey trailhead parking area.  The parking lot is fairly good sized, and there are some very nice pit toilets there.  You'll probably see me at the other end of the parking area (away from the toilets).  I usually drive a silver Rav4.  There's a $3 charge (honor system) for parking here, unless you have a yearly White Mountains parking sticker.

Fourteen GO'sers (huh?) turned up to tackle Welch-Dickey, quite eager to get their hiking legs back in shape, and were all treated to an amazingly spectacular day.  There wasn't a single cloud in the sky, and the views from the exposed ledges were absolutely awesome.  Hiking legs were more in shape than previously thought, for in spite of lingering at the ledges, and a leisurely pace, we were all back down to the parking lot an hour ahead of schedule.  Special mention goes to Len, who is recovering from a broken ankle, and managed to keep up with the group quite well, in spite of obvious discomfort.  So what does one do when one gets back down an hour ahead of schedule?  We all headed to the Mad River Tavern, which suddenly turned "gay" for a couple of hours, as the group took over for a welcomed beer & pub food.  We couldn't have asked for more:  a great group, great weather, and a great watering hole.
