Summary

Kick off 2024 by joining our New Year’s Celebration 5-mile round trip winter hike up Mt. Tecumseh [4003’]!

Around 1.1 miles we’ll take break to a view from the edge of the ski slope enclosing upper Waterville Valley. After the break, we’ll make a long, steady ascent up with a steep section going up a rock staircase right before reaching the ridge. On the ridge we make our final climb to the summit with good views of Mt. Osceola, Washington and the Tripyramids!

We will be hiking in early winter conditions at a moderate pace with time to enjoy the scenery. It will be 5 miles with 2200 ft elevation gain. There may be some ice and a coating of snow- light traction devices are mandatory. The hike will take approx. 4 hours.

What to wear/bring:  Microspikes will be necessary. We’ll let you know a few days prior if snowshoes will be needed. Don't forget to wear warm layers [NO COTTON OR BLUE JEANS], gloves, warm hat, rain/wind shell, goggles, face protection, headlamp/flashlight, water, lunch, snacks, and anything else you would bring for a cold weather hike. We are taking hand warmers for our gloves. Winter insulated boots to keep your feet and toes warm recommended.

We’ll have lunch on the summit. Carry at least 2 liters of water [use hot water and place your water bottle in a thick wool sock, insulated thermos or water bottle parka], lunch and snacks. A small thermos of hot liquids is a welcome treat at the summit!

Après Hiking Dinner:  Everyone is welcome to join us back at our house in Waterville Valley to relax beside our fireplace and soak in our hot tub with views of the Sandwich Mountain/Mad River [BYOB and bring snacks] followed by one of Jon's delicious dinners. We ask $10 per person to help pay for our food costs. Showers are available so bring a change of clothing to make your visit with us more comfortable. Bring some Champagne to toast the New Year!!!

Lodging Option: Bunk beds are available at our house [with Wi Fi] near Waterville Valley, NH for Friday and/or Saturday night. The cost is $25 for Friday night and $35 for Saturday that includes dinner [$60 for the weekend]. Coffee/bagels each morning and linen/blankets/towels are provided. Space is limited so email ASAP to reserve a bunk!

Event Coordinators: Mike Boisvert and Jon Normand

Directions To Trailhead Parking Lot

To the Waterville Valley Ski Area Parking Lot #1 / Mount Tecumseh Trailhead. From I-93, take exit 28 for Route 49. At the bottom of the exit ramp, head East on Route 49. After 10.4 miles, turn left onto Tripoli Road. Follow Tripoli Road for 1.2 miles, then turn left onto the Waterville Valley Ski Area access road.  Follow the access road for 0.6 mile which will bring you to the parking areas and the ski lodge. Look for parking lot #1 (That is the closest parking lot to where the Mount Tecumseh trail begins.) Parking may be hard to find and you may have to park in a lower lot. We’ll probably meet you at the trailhead sign since we suspect it will be difficult to find each other in the parking lot itself.
