The hike is 4 1/2 miles long with 1850 feet of elevation gain and showcases everything the White Mountains have to offer: steep slopes, open ledges, a rocky scramble, woodland trails, but all in moderation. The spectacular views make this hike very rewarding for such a modest effort. Suggest to bring along lunch, snacks and water. Look under the "learn" tab for appropriate gear recommendations.
This hike is meant as a positive experience, so please leave discussions about politics or negative events at home. Enjoy the moment with nature and friends.
We will meet at the parking lot for the Welch-Dickey trail. Directions from I-93 are as follows:
Take Exit 28 (Campton/Waterville Valley) and head east on Rt. 49, the Mad River Road. In about a mile you will reach a traffic light at the intersection of Rt. 49 and Rt. 175. The Campton dam will be on your right, and the ledges of Welch-Dickey will be visible straight ahead from here. Go through the traffic light, staying on Rt. 49, and in about 4.5 miles turn left onto Upper Mad River Road (crossing the Mad River on a bridge as you do so). Stay on this road as it winds, and in 0.7 mile turn right onto Orris Road. There will be a sign here for the Welch-Dickey trail, so you can't miss it. Stay on Orris for about 0.6 mile and enter the parking lot on the right.

What a fantastic day! Thank you so much Fred and Mo for leading this hike. If anyone wants to see the group pics or share their own, feel free to do that here: https://photos.app.goo.gl/oSRuARC8nvBhJVNM6
Carl, I just noticed my transformation into a "Guest member" which can only mean one thing: I'm due to renew my membership! I'll have a check tomorrow, so just remind me to hand it to you.
Hey Joe and Keith! Glad you signed up. Looking forward to seeing you tomorrow.
If you want to make it a longer weekend, you are invited to come up to Bear Pond (near Franconia) after the hike (30 minutes north). Hang out on the deck, swim in the pond, grill some burgers or stay overnight.
Good morning. Weather reports for tomorrow are a little mixed but seems we can expect rain until early afternoon. If you're not going to join us, please take yourself off the list or let me know before the hike. DON'T BE A NO SHOW. It is inconsiderate to the group to have us wait for naught. You can reach me at 207-607-9274 by text. See you tomorrow!
Sounds good, Fred. Craig and I are in. We'll bring our pride flags (...and rain gear). See you on Saturday!
Morning rain, predicted to taper off around 10-11AM. Hike is still a go. The trail will likely be slippery, so prepare with good traction.
I sent the E-mail out but didn't post the notification: the new hike date is June 14th
Sadly, Saturday still looks bad. I have rescheduled this hike for June 7th. Leave a comment if you can't make that date and give me some alternate dates, and I will try to find a date that accommodates everyone. If I can't, then I will post a second Welch Dickey. So far, May 24th and June 21st are also options.
I was expecting this email Fred. Cripes this is just like last spring, rain every weekend.
Hi guys. I hate to say it, but here we go again with the rain! Although I'm not making a final decision until tomorrow, most likely I will need to reschedule this hike to the later part of May or June. If you guys give me some dates that would work for you, I will do my best to accomodate everyone. Check in tomorrow late afternoon for any updates. Mo and I will be hiking Huntington Ravine tomorrow.
