This is a big hike, but at 3.9 miles and 1,774’ of elevation gain, it is doable for anyone active throughout the spring. We will do the most common ascent & descent, White Dot Trail up & White Cross down. For those who have not climbed Monadnock before, the views are spectacular. Trekking poles can be helpful for this hike. We can check on trail conditions to see if microspikes will be needed when we go. We will start at 9 am, and this hike will take about four hours. Bring lunch for when we hit the summit.
You will need to make a reservation to park a car. The rates increased to $15 a few years ago, but this covers everyone in a vehicle. I recommend finding others who are signed up to go and carpool. The address for the Monadnock State Park Visitor Center is 169 Poole Rd, Jaffrey, NH 03452. I hope you can join us!

Thanks everyone for a beautiful day in Jaffrey. Below is a link to my photos from the day. Feel free to add your own if you want. Happy Fourth! https://photos.app.goo.gl/WjtEtFZ6wqf8hP2E8
I noticed some guys signed up for this hike listed themselves as "easy to moderate" as far as fitness level. Please note this is a moderate to strenuous hike. Below is a 3-minute video about preparing for this hike, but if this is beyond the scope if where your fitness is currently it might be a better idea to build up to it later in the season. https://youtu.be/KdI6-pV1b5c?si=HKtheB-hhHWjKhgC
One more quick note for tomorrow. Just in case we don't have cell phone reception, we'll be meeting in front of the cabin-like Monadnock Visitor Center, near the start of the White Dot trail.
Just a friendly reminder: you should be able to pay at the entrance tomorrow, but if you want to get your parking pass early you can do that at the link below (same as on the event description): https://newhampshirestateparks.reserveamerica.com/camping/monadnock-hq/r/deDetails.do?contractCode=NH&parkId=271000
Hi everyone. The weather on Friday looks fantastic for this hike--80 degrees and mostly sunny. If you want to carpool, please connect with each other soon to save a little on the fee. Anyone coming from MA or south is happy to meet at my place. I already have three guys joining me that day. This is a challenging hike, so remember to wear proper footwear, bring plenty of water and a lunch, and always have your 10 essentials for hiking. Reach out with any questions.
I’m coming from Raymond NH through Manchester. Anyone interested in carpooling down to Jaffrey ?
I’ll be in DC that weekend so I’ll drop and give up my spot. Hope y’all enjoy the hike!
I’m happy to defer to the group’s judgment. If y’all prefer to stay inside on a gross day that’s very understandable!
It sounds like we have a consensus. Honestly, as defiant as I want to be of this wet weekend weather pattern, hiking through a cold steady rain is not fun. (I know from plenty of experience.) I moved this to July 4th. As it's a holiday, some may be free that morning before fireworks in the evening. Feel free to drop if that date does not work for you.
Hi everyone. There is still a good chance we'll get light showers throughout the morning tomorrow. Do people still want to do this or would you prefer that I reschedule? I was hoping the Nor'easter would move out of here more quickly, but it's going to linger.
The forecast is holding steady for Saturday. Most likely it will be cloudy with a chance of a spot shower. It will be 58 as a high at the base, so probably much colder towards the summit. Please wear shoes with good traction as there will be a lot of residual moisture, layers, and be prepared for bugs (the reports say they are pretty bad currently). I will send an email so that everyone has my number. Hope to see you in a couple of days!
I can meet you guys in Jaffrey. I am monitoring the weather for Saturday. If the chances of rain increase, I’ll probably back out of the hike, but hopefully that won’t happen. Thanks, Carl.
I'm fine to go with a light rain---but also totally understand if you end up wanting to reschedule it! Also I'll probably just go straight to the trail head just in case I need to cut out early (I have a slight chance of an early afternoon commitment that I might need to cut my hike short for depending on how long we go for; hopefully not, but flagging just for transparency).
Thanks so much, Nick. They charge by the car. If anyone wants to meet in Jaffrey, we can carpool over to the park. With the Nor'easter coming tomorrow, the forecast has been up and down for Saturday. Right now it looks like there is a 24% chance of a shower, so remember your rain gear. *Fernando- great to have you join us!
Hey y'all, just a reminder to reserve your parking space at the trailhead parking lot. You can do that using the below link: https://www.nhstateparks.org/find-parks-trails/monadnock-state-park
