Join us for this late Summer walk of one of the jewels of Boston's park system, the Arnold Arboretum. We plan to walk along some of the off the beaten paths of the Arboretum, and will stop frequently to admire some of the unique features of this, the nation's oldest Arboretum. Among the highlights will be the maple collection, where we may be treated to the unusual sight of early fall foliage. We also plan to stop at the bonsai collection, before it gets put away for the winter, and last but not least, we will stop at the site of the "ruins" of the old Bussey estate, which is right next to the Explorers Garden. This Garden was the subject of a recent article in the JP News regarding work to expand it. Here is a link to that article: https://jamaicaplainnews.com/2024/08/27/interns-launch-explorers-garden-expansion-at-arnold-arboretum/671483?utm_source=Jamaica+Plain+News+readers&utm_campaign=b76a8b7106-RSS_EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_02130News&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_13c06e47ea-b76a8b7106-153364769 After we complete our walk, there will be an opportunity to gather for an early dinner and/or drinks at the always popular Galway House in JP Center. Plan on at least two hours for the walk, perhaps more if we decide to linger in particular spots.
Rain will cancel this event.
We will meet in front of the Hunnewell Visitors Center at the main entrance to the Arboretum (see photo). The official address is: 125 Arborway, JP, 02130. Parking in front of the Arboretum is allowed, but if it is full, you can always park on the residential streets (that are not posted), or at the public parking lot behind Blanchard's or behind the Galway House. If you are taking the T, take the Orange Line to the Forest Hills station (the last stop) or Bus #39 to the same station. The Forest Hills station is right across the street from the Arboretum, though note that the Hunnewell Building on the other side of the park, by the main entrance.
