Summary
This bike trip is part of the GO camping weekend at Vitambi, but you are welcome to join us even if you are just coming for the day. We will meet after breakfast in front of the Lodge at the Vitambi campground, and carpool from there to the trailhead in Clewiston, a half hour away. If you are not staying at Vitambi, please e-mail me and I will send you the location of the trailhead in Clewiston. The Lake Okeechobee Scenic Trail (LOST) is a mostly paved hiking & biking path built on top of the levee/dam circling the lake. It has been undergoing reconstruction for several years, but the section around Clewiston is now completed and ready for use again. We will start just outside of Clewiston and bike 13 miles over to the Moore Haven trailhead, and back. This is a flat paved trail, so 26 miles should be a relatively easy to moderate event. However, we will be more attuned to time rather than mileage, as we want to be back at our cars by 1:00 p.m. at the latest, in order to go do lunch at one of Clewiston's finest restaurants. We have been told that there is such a thing...
We will look into getting additional bikes or finding a rental place in Clewiston, though when we last checked there was none. So, please bring your own bike if you want to ride the trail. If enough people want to hike rather than bike, let's talk it over at the Meet & Greet on Friday night, and we can organize a separate excursion. Whether biking or walking, this trail has no trees or shade of any type, so please come prepared with hats, sunscreen, etc. Also, there is no potable water on the trail, or food, so bring plenty of water and snacks. There will also be lots of bugs on the trail, in addition to the usual birds, alligators, and turtles. The alligators will be sunning themselves down by the edge of the water, so don't approach them and you will be ok. Mosquitoes, on the other hand, will come looking for you, so come prepared and bring bug repellent. Rain will cancel the event.
Directions To Trailhead Parking Lot
As stated above, we will meet at the parking area in front of the Vitambi Lodge to carpool to the trailhead.

Unfortunately, it looks like this portion of the trail is still closed. So we are looking to go a further east to the Pahokee Marina, where the trail is still open. We will let you know Friday night.
I'm going to try to make this because it sounds sooo wonderful. I'll be coming up from Kew West early in the morning(1/18) and hope to be at the campsite by 9a. I'll keep me fingers crossed that I can meetup up with you guys. But if not, I'll look forward to hearing you guys tell me all about it. Thank you. Gerard
