Memorial Day offers lots of opportunities for outdoor recreation, but nothing compares with celebrating one last hurrah of spring before summer's heat begins.  Big Sur offered such a celebration.  Wildflowers that had disappeared from southern California a month ago were still blooming there.  Unfortunately, we had to endure the damage from the devastating fire of 2008, which is still sending lots of deadfall trees across trails, making navigation a real challenge.  But we persevered, savoring spectacular coast views and solitary campsites.
