Summary

6.6-mile out-and-back trail near Gorham, New Hampshire. It takes an average of 4 h to complete but calculate more like 5hrs depending on weather conditions and time for lunch. Elevation gain 2050ft. This route begins from Hogan Road and follows the Centennial Trail through Lead Mine State Forest and White Mountain National Forest. It's a steady incline the whole way to the summit of Mount Hayes. Continue past the summit and follow the blue blazes to the ledges for incredible views of the Carter-Moriah range and the Northern Presidential. Expect icy sections and wear sturdy footwear and grip (micros pikes and such). Dress in layers. Shoot me a message if interested in meeting for a great breakfast at the Waterwheel in Jefferson before the hike.

Directions To Trailhead Parking Lot

From the south, I-93, take exit for Twin Mountain/Gorham. Follow Rt 3. At the intersection with rt 302, continue straight through the light. At the Intersection with Rt 115, make a right. Follow to Rt 2 then make a right onto Rt 2 east towards Gorham. Once in Gorham, at the light, make a right. Travel about 4.7 miles and make a left onto North rd. (you will see the Portland Pipeline Corporation on the left side right before North Rd comes up on your left). In 0.6 miles you will see the trailhead parking on the left, corner of Hogan Rd and North Rd. Hogan Rd is not plowed beyond that.

I have a few pairs of snowshoes if anyone needs them. I will bring them along in my car just in case.....

Bummer, JT. We were really looking forward to seeing you. It's been a while. Hopefully soon. David. I'll send you more details on the directions after our hike today. I'll take note of the exact distance between North Rd and the trailhead.

Apologies, due to work/travel i am unable to do the hike. Be safe, watch out for snow fleas.

dpbyrnes Posted Feb 20, 2025 at 7:04 PM

Actually, All Trails gives a good indication of where the Trail head starts. Sorry, should have looked at that first. ;(

Hey Fred, that's awesome for you and Mo to do that! Question, looking at google maps it shows an icon for Centennial/Appalachian Trail almost at the intersection of North and Hogan. So when you say "In about half a mile take Hogan Rd." Do you mean take a Left on Hogan Road? And by "Eventually you will see parking on the left side." any sense of what eventually means? 1/2 mile, mile? etc. Really looking forward to another hike with you guys. cya on Sat. morning

If anyone is staying overnight with Bob on Saturday night, would you be interested in doing a small hike on Sunday before heading home? I can post Indian Head and lunch in Lincoln. Normally you might not travel this far north for such a small hike, but if you're already here, why not do the hike (which won't take long), have a quick lunch then head home? Call it a 2 for 1 deal!

Hikers can stay over my house near Franconia Friday and or Saturday nights if desired. Email to RSVP or for directions.
