Summary

This peak overlooks Waterville Valley, whose fall colors should be on full display at this time! This peak is on both the New England 100 Highest and 52 with a View lists. We’ll be hiking up the less used Algonquin Trail with few people on a busy Columbus Day Weekend.

The hike is about 9 miles, 2,850 elevation gain, and provides many extensive views from the open ledges on the southwest shoulder, sometimes called Black Mountain; Sandwich Mountain has fine views north over Waterville Valley. The varied terrain includes a few steep climbs, some technical terrain and one difficult/intimidating rock scramble for those with a fear of heights with a thirty foot drop directly behind it if you slipped.

Don't forget to bring wind/rain shell, water, lunch, snacks, warm hat/gloves, fleece, etc. along with whatever you typically have for a hiking excursion in autumn. We’ll have lunch on top of the summit.

Social Mixer: Following the hike, everyone is welcome back at our house in Waterville Valley, socialize around the deck and/or fireplace and enjoy dinner! It's BYOB and it costs $10 per person.

Lodging Option: Bunk beds are available at our house near Waterville Valley, NH for Friday and Saturday night. Its $25 dollars for Friday night and $25 for Saturday night. Coffee/bagels each morning and linen/blankets/towels are provided. We have 4 bunks available so the first 4 guys that contact us to reserve will get one; and let us know which night[s] you’ll be lodging with us. You’re on your own for dinner Friday night but you’re welcome to use our kitchen facilities to cook!

Directions To Trailhead Parking Lot

Trailhead is on the north side of the narrow, dirt and rough Sandwich Notch Road [low clearance cars may have difficulty], 1.4 miles north of the power line along Beebe River and 3.5 miles south of NH 49. Sandwich Notch Road is off I-93, Exit 28, about 5 miles off NH 49 as you head towards Waterville Valley; if you reached Smarts Brook Trailhead parking you missed the road. We'll be driving a blue Toyota Tacoma.

Hi I am Kai, new to the group. Will anyone drive from/pass Boston that can give me a ride? I will pay for gas. Thanks

Ricardo Posted Oct 4, 2022 at 11:07 PM

Thanks Mike! I'm still unsure if I can make it to the hike but if I do, I should be okay making the road.

Gandalf Posted Oct 4, 2022 at 6:15 PM

We saw Markus today and said he can make the road with his Forester so he can give James a ride. Jon and I can give Jeff and Brian a ride. Ricardo and northbound, contact outsider87 if you need to carpool in the event your car cannot make the road. Thanks!

regularguyma Posted Oct 4, 2022 at 10:34 AM

hi- I would need a ride, thanks!

Gandalf Posted Oct 4, 2022 at 6:25 AM

There are now ten of us...JT [nhclimber] can no longer make it but is offering to give guys a ride on Sandwich Notch Road if needed. Who does not have an SUV/truck and needs a ride? I know I can take two and Steve [Outsider87] can take 3 so that leaves two. Please let me know which ones of you plan to drive on Sandwich Notch Road to the trailhead...would not want to bother JT unless we have to. Thanks!

Outsider87 Posted Oct 3, 2022 at 3:48 PM

For folks that need a ride, I will be at the parking area on NH-49 at 8:00am. Driving towards Waterville, the parking is past the Sandwich Notch cut-off, past Smart's Brook trailhead, and the next turn-in on the LEFT side of the road. It's a small loop. This should be enough time to get to the trailhead by 8:30am. If you need a ride, please send an email to me so we don't miss anyone. Thanks.

Gandalf Posted Oct 3, 2022 at 3:41 PM

For the guys staying with Jon & I, do one of you have a high clearance vehicle? I can't fit six guys in my truck...sorry. For the person who does, perhaps we can make arrangements to pick up Northbound.

northbound Posted Oct 3, 2022 at 1:57 PM

Thanks, Mike. I’d need a ride from rt 49 to the trailhead.

Gandalf Posted Oct 2, 2022 at 6:09 PM

Perhaps those of you with a high clearance vehicle can meet at a certain time at the parking area on the left after Smarts Brook trailhead off Route 49. There are members concerned about driving on Sandwich Notch Road. My truck is already full from the guys spending the night.

Gandalf Posted Sep 9, 2022 at 2:50 PM

Improvements have been made on Sandwich Notch Road however if you have a low clearance car you may have an issue. The trailhead is about ½ way thru Sandwich Notch Road so there is a bit of a drive on this rough road. You might have an easier time getting to the trailhead from Sandwich NH side then from the Thornton/Waterville NH side.
