Summary

With 210 acres, Peddocks Island is one of the largest and most scenic of the Boston Harbor Islands.  Composed of five drumlins, the island is crossed by scenic hiking trails and has unique geological features, sweeping sand beaches, woodlands, historic structures and spectacular views of the harbor and Boston.  We'll take the 10:00 am ferry from Long Wharf North to Georges Island, then hop on the water taxi for the quick trip to Peddocks.  Starting our hike at East Head, we'll explore the eerie ruins of Fort Andrews, continue on to Middle Head with its remnants of an old summer colony and fishing village, walk around stunning Prince Head and the shoreline around West Head, then over to picturesque Peggy's Cove, where we can jump in the harbor waters for a bracing swim. After the hike around East Head we'll return to the fort and dock.  The hike has a length of about 5.0 miles.  We'll return on the 4:10 pm direct ferry, arriving 5:00 pm in Boston, where we can get together for schmoozing at a local eatery/pub.

As there are no facilities on the island (okay - there is a restroom near the dock), please be sure to bring plenty of water, food for lunch, sunblock, insect repellent, hat, a towel and bathing suit for the possible swim, and any personal items you may require.

Rain will cancel.

Directions To Trailhead Parking Lot

We'll take the 10:00 a.m. ferry to Georges Island from Long Wharf North in Boston and return on the 4:10 p.m. direct ferry from Peddocks Island to Boston.  We'll meet at 9:30 a.m. at Long Wharf North in front of the Boston's Harbor Cruises ticket kiosk, on the north side of the Marriott Long Wharf Hotel.  For meeting location and directions, please view online: http://www.bostonharborislands.org/ferry-schedule/

The recommended address for GPS is: 66 Long Wharf, Boston, MA 02110.

Round-trip ferry tickets to Georges Island will cost $19.95.  As weekends are busy with the ferries, you should purchase your tickets in advance online at: http://www.bostonharborislands.org/purchase-ferry-tickets/
