Summary

Frederick Law Olmsted, the landscape architect who famously conceived of Boston’s 1,100-acre Emerald Necklace, designed a residential subdivision for this small peninsula in Hingham, MA.  The roads and trees were placed based on his design, but the land remained open.  Two-thirds of it was eventually acquired by a group of locals who did not want to see it developed, and the Trustees of Reservations took over management of the land in the 1960s.  The park, World’s End, now features 400+ acres of rolling drumlins and rocky shoreline, with iconic views of Boston.

We will be doing a 4-mile loop through the park.  It should take about two hours, and after that we will find a shady place to have a picnic—so bring your lunch!  You have to reserve a parking spot, and it is $15 unless you are a Trustee member.  Our meeting place will be at Stop & Shop on Lincoln Street in Hingham at 8:30 am.  We will meet at the backside of the Stop & Shop parking lot across from the 99 Restaurant (see screenshot below).  From there, we can carpool over to World’s End, which is about 10 minutes away.  I am a member of the Trustees and have booked a spot for 9 am, which I can share with up to four other people.  Depending on interest, we can determine if additional reservations are needed.  I hope you can join us!

We have plenty of room. Happy to have you join us, Jim.

jimlama Posted Aug 7, 2025 at 7:06 PM

Hi gang. Potential new add-on here. Would appreciate a ride over from S&S, but if i have to wait until this event happens again, I can do that as well. I'm relatively small so can probably squeeze into most roof top carriers if necessary...

Carl Posted Aug 5, 2025 at 6:32 AM

Thanks everyone. We actually now have plenty of car space, which is great if there are cohorts who knows they need to get back sooner and other who want to hang out longer. Final line-up: Fred (4), Chuck (4), Brian (4), Bob (5), and me (4). See you on Sunday!

Bob Mcgee Posted Aug 5, 2025 at 5:58 AM

I reserved a spot I can take four members plus myself Carl

regularguyma Posted Aug 4, 2025 at 8:30 PM

We reserved a parking spot and would have room for 2 from the stop and shop

Carl Posted Aug 4, 2025 at 5:51 PM

We're up to 16, which should be fine for an event like this--we just need to get a fourth car. Bob- if you don't mind booking a nonmember parking spot, I'm sure a few of us could throw you some money to offset the cost. This would cover up to 17-18 if we have any additional add-ons: Fred (4), Chuck (4), Bob (5), and me (4-5, again Mazda 3s are small), Total of 17-18.

Thanks Lew for the Tip about the MA tax holiday. I can't think of anything I need that I could not buy in NH for less money and no tax. I have been to IKEA many times when I lived in Florida so probably don't need to check out the MA store unless it is extra special.

BILL0624 Posted Aug 4, 2025 at 9:15 AM

I just reserved a spot and think I filled the event at 15 people. I just noticed the parking situation. I am not a Trustee member and would be grateful if I could share parking with someone. I am coming from NH. Please let me know. Thanks.

Bob Mcgee Posted Aug 4, 2025 at 9:01 AM

We can us my car Carl I could fit four plus myself if the people in the back are little tight however I am not a trustee member

Carl Posted Aug 4, 2025 at 7:32 AM

Aaaaaand...we're at 14. A fourth car would be ideal, if possible. We can also share the cost of a nonmember to park.

Carl Posted Aug 4, 2025 at 7:03 AM

Hey everyone. I'm excited to see such interest in this park! Right now we can accommodate all 13 of us (five in my Mazda 3 is tight, though it's a short ride). If there are any other Trustees members, feel free to book a 9am slot.

Carl Posted Aug 2, 2025 at 4:59 AM

Thanks, Chuck. I have to say, the prospect of us booking ALL of the 9am parking spots and having our exclusive run of the place for an hour or so is not lost on me. :cue maniacal laughter: All jokes- I'm happy people are interested in this outing!

outsider Posted Aug 1, 2025 at 8:52 PM

I’m also a member of the Trustees and can take 3 passengers to the parking lot. 9 am. reserved.

Carl Posted Aug 1, 2025 at 5:22 PM

Sounds good, Fred. Excited to finally meet you!

fredthys Posted Aug 1, 2025 at 5:04 PM

I am also a member and have signed up for a 9 AM slot. I could take 3 people from the Stop and Shop parking lot.
