Trailhead Location: Route 108, Smuggler’s Notch, Vermont

Join us for an unforgettable hike up Mount Mansfield (4,393 ft) — Vermont’s highest peak! We’ll take the Long Trail from Smuggler’s Notch, visit Taft Lodge, and push to The Chin, the true summit, with panoramic views of Lake Champlain, the Adirondacks, Worcester Range, the White Mountains, and even Killington Peak!

Hike Details:

  • Distance: 5 miles round-trip
  • Elevation Gain: 2,793 ft
  • Difficulty: Moderate to Challenging
  • Highlights:
    • Forested start with open hardwoods
    • Water refill at Taft Lodge
    • Exposed summit push
    • 360-degree views!

What to Bring:

  • Sturdy hiking shoes/boots
  • Water, snacks, lunch
  • Layers & rain/wind gear
  • Bug spray & sunscreen
  • Camera & your adventurous spirit!

Post-Hike Social:

After the hike, we’ll head to Prohibition Pig in Waterbury for great food and local brews!

Lodging Option:

Staying the night? We’ve booked rooms at Best Western, Waterbury, VT. Indoor pool, hot tub, hot breakfast included. Let us know if you’d like to join us for Friday night dinner too!

Directions To Trailhead Parking Lot

  • From I-89 N, take Exit 10 for VT-100 S toward Waterbury/US-2
  • Drive 0.3 mi, turn right onto VT-100 N
  • After 9.5 mi, turn left on VT-108 N (Mountain Rd)
  • Drive ~9 mi. Parking lot is on the right, trail starts on the left.
  • Look for a blue Toyota Tacoma. Meet us at the Long Trail sign at 9:00 AM sharp!
    Parking is limited — arrive early.

I can host a couple of people in Barre Town (twin beds). Prohibition Pig is not bad but Idyll Time or the Van Trapp tap room (both in Stowe) are nicer if you want to sit outside. --Frank
