Porter's Progress

These amazing men and women support the trekking industry of Nepal on their backs. Porters lighten the hearts of, and shoulder the load for, the hundreds of thousands of foreign visitors that come to Nepal each year. The money generated by this industry is vital to the cash-starved economies of rural Nepal.

Porter's Progress was formed as a response to the tragic events taking place to porters in Nepal. It is their goal to promote a sustainable and just trekking industry for everyone involved. They operate from two offices in Nepal - one in Thamel. Kathmandu, and the other in Lukla, Solu-Khumbu.

Their programs focus on ideas generated by porters themselves. They are in the process of establishing a cooperative administration comprised of industry members, porter advocates, and porters, to inherit and run their own programs in Nepal.

Programs include:

  • English and Empowerment Classes
  • Cottage Industry Intiative
  • Clothing Lending Program
  • Stove Lending Program
  • Outreach and Awareness

Porter's Progress depends on your support. Just $20 (a fill-up at a gas station) buys 200 notebooks to help porters learn English! If you would like to make a tax-deductible donation make out your check to Porter's Progress and mail it to:
