Black Bear Camp & Lodge - Waverly, Alabama

A gravel road winds through the Black Bear Camp & Lodge wilderness resort. It looks like any of the paths leading to hunting lodges where countless Southern men spend weekends this time of year. Then, you come to the sign: "Clothing optional area." This isn't your ordinary, out-of-the-way spot in the woods of east Alabama. Black Bear Camp, a 33 acre resort catering to gay men who enjoy nature au naturel. Black Bear Camp isn't for hunting. It's for socializing.

The clientele tends to be gay men best described as the rugged type! Many have beards and bellies and would rather sit around the lodge watching football on television than go to a gay bar. More than 50 percent of the guests here are married or divorced with kids. This is not the type of camp for flamboyant types.

There's bunk space for 24 in the 3,600 square-foot lodge, which has a tin roof and all the comforts of home plus some: Internet access, satellite TV, a hot tub and an above-ground swimming pool with deck. As many as 30 guests have been here on a weekend, but the more typical crowd is six or seven.

Triangle Recreation Camp - Granite Falls, Washington

Triangle Recreation Camp is a membership organization - use of the campground is restricted to members only. However, they welcome first-time and occasional visitors who do not wish to purchase a full annual membership, by offering "limited" memberships that are valid for a single visit.  A "limited" membership for one night of overnight camping is only $10!

Every year from April through October their campground is transformed from a raw patch of wild forest to a thriving gay community in the wilderness. A core group of regular campers maintain "semi-permanent" campsites that they set up and occupy throughout an entire season. With energy and creativity in the extreme, semi-permanent campers go to great lengths to create their own version of paradise in the forest. With names like Bushwackers, Trade R Dic's, Cum-A-Lot and Would-He?, the semi-permanent sites give the campground its character, consistency, and a sense of community. For less frequent campers, ample space is available to pitch a tent for a night, a weekend, or several days at a time.

The campround is located at Bender Creek, 21 miles east of Granite Falls, Washington on the Mountain Loop Highway. In eastern Snohomish County, the Mountain Loop Byway opens the door to a hikers and campers paradise. In the Mt. Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest you will find over 360 miles of hiking and horse trails, numerous picnic sites, scenic roads and 3 wilderness areas. Wild and scenic rivers, waterfalls, alpine lakes, scenic vistas and old growth forests provide activities for nearly everyone.
