Interview with Gary Norman

Tell us about your outdoors experience.

Mostly hiking, biking and camping. But more recently, kayaking, snowmobiling, and jet skiing.

How much do you like outdoor recreation? Are you in love with it? If so...when did you fall in love and where?

I very much enjoy biking, been doing it since my 20's - only now it's less on public roads and mostly on rail trails.

If you knew someone who was thinking of starting outdoor recreation, what advice would you give them?

Pick an activity that you think you might like and find a group to go do it with. Start light and easy.

What was your first GO excursion? How did it turn out?

Not really sure now. I think it was a hike in Connecticut a friend had told me about and I had to join to sign up. It was enjoyable - I don't remember ever being on an event that wasn't.

What do you like about GayOutdoors?

Friendly people and the way it is set up  - it's so easy to sign up, or cancel if necessary, and the events come to you (through email announcements) - you don't have to search them out.

Describe Connecticut to our outdoorzy members who’ve never been there? Is there a lot to do if you are an outdoor enthusiast?

Absolutely! Connecticut may be the flatlands of New England, but there are a lot of great places to hike at all levels. A lot of very nice rail trails for biking, And lakes and ponds for swimming, kayaking.

What changes have you made to better our environment?

I recycle more now.

What is your wish list for adventure travel and why?

I do enjoy visiting places that are different from what we're used to in New England - such as Istanbul and Costa Rica.

What is your favorite thing to do a perfect summer day?

A bike ride on a rail trail or going to an antique car show. Did I mention stopping for ice cream?

If you could spend the day on the trail with one person, living or dead, it would be…

My partner, Ron.
