Interview with Martin Reinhart

Tell us about your outdoors experience.

I hiked the New England 4000 footers. In the winter, XC skiing is on top of my list. But my passion is long distance backpacking. I have hiked the Appalachian Trail, Vermont’s Long Trail and the California section of the Pacific Crest Trail.

How much do you like to outdoor recreation? Are you in love with it? If so...when did you fall in love and where?

Being in love with it is an understatement - it’s my life. It all started when my parents took me hiking in the Austrian Alps as a kid (I grew up in Europe).

If you knew someone who was thinking of starting outdoor recreation, what advice would you give them?

Start small, get (buy, borrow or rent) good equipment right away and go with someone experienced. Take chocolate with you on your trip :)

What was your first GO excursion? How did it turn out?

It was a winter hike over the Mt. Tom, Willey and Field range. I learned about the NH 4000 footers and peak bagging. I was hooked!

What do you like about GayOutdoors?

The people. It’s such a great way to connect in a supportive environment.

Describe Vermont to our outdoorzy members who’ve never been there? Is there a lot to do if you are an outdoor enthusiast?

The best hiking opportunities are along the Long Trail and its side trails. Most sections can be explored as day hikes. More of a water person? We have plenty of lakes and rivers for canoeing and kayaking, not to mention the numerous swimming holes. Some of the best skiing/riding in the East can be found here. VT (in particular the northern half) is a little less crowded than other places closer to Boston.

What is your favorite Adventure Travel place?

The mountains out West. Many trails are above tree line with panoramic views throughout. Quite a different experience from New England.

What is your wish list for adventure travel and why?

Alaska. My goal is to visit all 50 states. Five left to go and Alaska seems the most exciting.

What is your favorite thing to do a perfect summer day?

A hike up a mountain with a view, cooling off at a swimming hole in the afternoon followed by drinks and a good meal with friends.

If you could spend the day on the trail with one person, living or dead, it would be…

John Muir. Such a great visionary about the environment of an era gone by. Lots to learn about life.
