Trip Report/Photos from markhoughtaling
technically it was spring but winter hadn't yet left these catskill high peaks. we parked a car at shaft road, then drove over to devil's path trailhead where we started our adventure. after a short walk along devil's path trail, we made a sharp left and began the bushwhack up north dome.
what distinguishes this mountain is its very steep slope and a series of 6 or 7 magnificent rock bands that require some thoughful negotiation. this was my favorite part of the day. my guide moe knew where to ascend each cliff -- and where to find the great viewpoint just below the summit.
after hiking down to the col, we began ascending mount sherrill -- still very steep and a few more rocky scrambles. here too there is a spectacular view before reaching the summit.
we descended along a more gradual diagonal slope, winding up on an old logging road which took us back to shaft road.
another excellent day in the mountains.
