Summary

This will be a one-way south to north hike on the AT from Spy Rock Road to the Try River at Va. 56. The hike will be 10.4 miles in length with a one mile approach trail from the Montebello Fish Hatchery trailhed and 9.4 miles on the AT.

Once on the AT there will be a 500 ft. elevation gain to the wooded summit of Main Top Mountain (4040 ft) with great views from Spy Rock and Cash Hollow Rock. After some slight ups and downs we'll reach the wooded summit of Priest Mountain (4063 ft). Will get partial views of the Tye River.

From here we begin a decent of 3000 ft. over the next 4.3 miles to the Tye River.

Spy Rock was used as a lookout point for the Confederate Army as the Tye River was a major supply route.

Plan to spend 6 hours on the trail for this hike.

Being a one-way hike, this hike will require a car shuttle.

This is a clothing optional hike in preparation for the Summer Solstice hike coming up.

Directions To Trailhead Parking Lot

We will be leaving for this hike from the Super 8 hotel in Lexington, Va. at 8:00 AM sharp. It is located at 1139 North Lee Highway, Lexington, Va. Zip Code 24450.

Please arrive early enough for planning and driving instructions. The drive from the hotel to the beginning of the hike will take 1 hour and 37 minutes.
