Summary

We will hike up the Air Line Trail and take the Airline Cutoff to the Madison Spring Hut. (The hut will already have closed for the season.)  From the hut, we will take the Osgood trail to the summit of Mt Madison and back.  Then we will head down the Valley Way Trail to the parking lot.

These trails offer spectacular views of the Presidential and nearby mountain ranges as well as overlooking the precipitous King Ravine.  The option of hanging around the hut/nearby Star Lake is available rather than going to the summit, if we are out of energy or weather looks to be deteriorating.  Valley Way is the most sheltered trail to descend.

Be prepared for cold/winter-like weather at the upper elevation even though it is still fall in the valley.  Dress in layers and a windproof/waterproof outer shell.  Gloves and warm hat highly recommended.  Pack water to keep hydrated and foods high in energy.  Feel free to e-mail me with any questions.

8.5 miles

4050 elevation gain

Estimate 8.5 hours

Rain Date: Poor weather will postpone to Wed, Oct 13.

Directions To Trailhead Parking Lot

We will meet at Appalachia parking area on Route 2.
