Salkantay Trek - Peru
This was a 4-day, 3-night trek through the highlands and canyons of eastern Peru. Salkantay is the center piece of this trek, it is a 20,574 ft. mammoth of a mountain, with glaciers spilling from it's jagged peak.
The high point of the trek is the 15,180 ft Salkantay pass. I would not recommend this for people who have never trekked.
My buddy made the pass but had never been above 10,000 ft. It was no easy chore.
You camp in small villages and get to experience how the local highland people live. There are no ruins to speak of on the way, but the trek ends in Aguas Calientes, the town just below Machu Picchu.
We woke up at 3:30 the morning after we ended our trek and made the 4 mile hike straight up the Incan stairs to Machu Picchu. The landscapes are amazing, and I've seen this trek rated as one of the best in the world several times. If you get a chance, do this before you die!!!
