Summary

Summary: A relaxing weekend in the woods. We will be glamping along Wheeler Pond in the Northeast Kingdom of Vermont at the Jean Haigh Cabin, which was built by the Green Mountain Club in 2023. Located in Barton, VT, the cabin sleeps 8 (4 single bunks; 2 double bunks), and includes a woodstove (firewood provided) and privy. While the cabin is rustic without running water (treat all pond water) or electricity, it is fully enclosed and has seating/table, outdoor fire ring, and a screened porch to keep out those pesky blackflies so abundant in the spring.

On Saturday, 05/17, we will hike (r/t approx. 8.4 mi.) to the summit of Mount Hor (2,648 ft.) with an elevation gain of 1,650 ft. This hike provides impressive views of Lake Willoughby, Wheeler Pond, and Bald Mountain from numerous cliffs and overlooks.

For those who arrive early on Friday, a warmup 4.4 mile hike is on tap to the summit of Wheeler Mountain (2,370 ft.), with an elevation gain of 700 ft. and views of Jay Peak, Mount Mansfield and Mt. Pisgah along the way.

What To Bring: Clothing appropriate for early spring in the north country; as well as gear for a weekend camping in the backcountry (i.e., sleeping system, food, water filtration, light, first aid, toiletries, bug spray, etc). Coordinator will provide a list of suggested items upon sign-up. PACK IT IN, PACK IT OUT principles apply.

Note: Tenting camping is NOT permitted at the cabin.

Meals: Folks should bring items to share along with individual food supply.

Evening Entertainment: Campfire; card/board games.

Directions To Trailhead Parking Lot

Meeting Location: Parking area on Wheeler Mountain Road in Barton, VT. NOTE: Carpooling is highly recommended as the parking area has very limited space.

Directions: The cabin is located at 858 Wheeler Mountain Road, Barton VT (less than 1/2 mile hike from parking to cabin). Take Interstate 91 North to exit 23. At exit 23 take Route 5 North to Wheeler Mountain Road (distance from exit to Wheeler Mt. Rd. approx. 9 mi.). Turn right onto Wheeler Mountain Road. Drive 0.8 miles to the camp.

From Lyndon, VT: Head north on US-5 N. Stay left on US-5 N when 5A splits off in West Burke. 8.3 mi after that split, turn right on Wheeler Mountain Road. After .9 mi, you will see a dirt pull off on your right with a wooden GMC sign. Please do not block the gate when parking. If full, please park in the dirt pull-off on the west/left side of the road just before the main lot.

From Barton, VT: Head out of town on US-5 S. 2 mi after passing Crystal Lake, turn left on Wheeler Mountain Road. See parking instructions above.
