On Saturday January 25th, get ready for a great winter hike... winter hiking experience is required. Snowshoes as well. We don't want to destroy the trails!!! Dogs not permitted
10 miles,
Follow NH Route 16 north through Pinkham Notch to the town of Gorham and turn left (West) on Highway 2. The Appalachia Trailhead parking is on the left roughly 6 miles west of Gorham. I will be there with a grey Mazda 3 Hatchback.
Or take I-93 North, then US Highway 3 North, and then NH Route 115. Turn right (east) on US highway 2 and drive about 12 miles to reach the trailhead.
Coming from North, take I-93 South and then exit 40. Follow Route 302 up to Twin Mountan. Then US Highway 3 North (left), and then NH Route 115. Turn right on US highway 2 and drive about 12 miles to reach the trailhead.

It was not the expected journey, but the final result was still great. After reading the Mount Washington Observatory weather morning report, we decided that we didnt want to be in a Rangers rescue report.
From the Appalachia trailhead where we first met, we decided to go for a smaller and close destination. Waumbek became our alternate...
We got to the Waumbek winter parking pretty fast. We then realized that te summer parking lot is still accessible becuz of the very little snow. We knew by reading other trip repots that snowshoes would not be necessary. We left themin the cars. The trail was covered of snow with some ice spots. Mark put his microspikes while i was still barebooting for a good part of the ascent... however, with absolutely no benefit to that.
We quickly reached Starr King at 3907 feet and from there, we walked the remaining mile pretty fast to reach the Waumbek summit at 4006.
We met a few ppl during the whole journey. Only one was wearing snowshoes.
We really took our time since it was our first time togther. I really enjoyed meeting Mark becuz he seems a passionate of being outdoor and I really appreciated his safety value wen i brought the fact that we may not follow the original plan.
Thanks Mark for your good company during this grea day!
