TRIP REPORT
POCAHONTAS STATE PARK KAYAK TRIP
06/02/2013

It was a warm, calm morning with quite a few people, mostly families, on the lake, a few people were walking on the trails near the lake and a couple of fisherman on the shore as the trip started.

Stan and I met at the Ledo Pizza and drove to the parking lot with the boat ramp. Officially it is Swift Creek, but it is more of a Lake than a creek.

Stan and I started on the typically still waters headed upstream, passing under a steel and wood footbridge, passed about a half-dozen hopeful fisherman (kids), bypassing the  shortcut passage with leaning trees I normally take and instead went around an island and proceeding up to the main body of water.

Due to the amount of kayakers, hikers, and fisherman in boats, the beavers were hiding. Matter of fact the usual wildlife was mostly not visible, although the birds were around. As we headed up stream we got away from the other boaters and more birds were visible. I even saw my very first Prothonotary Warbler!!

We headed back to our starting point and continued beyond, downstream, and proceeded to go around masses of white water lilies exuding their vanilla-like fragrance and up a channel, under another bridge and pathway. We didn’t get too far beyond the bridge but the shady area and the breezes blowing in the trees and surface of the lake beckoned us to sit back and take a nap. We headed back and ended the trip. Total time was 75 minutes.
