We'll first meet near Ledo Pizza, 7052 Commons Plaza, Chesterfield, VA, just off Beach Road.  I'll have a gray 2007 Ford 4x4 F-150. Then we'll drive down the 3.5 miles to the entrance of the park.

Use mapquest or Maps.Google on "State Park Road and Beach Road, Chesterfield, VA" to get to the turn off and to get to the main gate.

The trail head is near the Nature Center and Heritage Center, about 1/4 mile from the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) Museum.  We'll start the ride in the parking lot near, but not next to the Nature Center (you'll see other bikers parked for sure).

Pocahontas State Park Mountain Bike Ride
Tuesday 6/05/2013

Rob and I met at the parking lot of the Science Center, Pocahontas State park and biked up the fire road which leads you to the trail head. The conditions were a perfect and the trails were in excellent shape.

At the trail head you have three choices, green (easy) about 2.1 miles; blue (intermediate) about 4.7 miles, and red (advanced) 2.6 miles. We chose the blue trail which was a great balance of twists and turns, logs to cross, exposed roots, as well as a few rocks to go over. The ride took about 45 minutes.

We then headed down to the lake and the boat ramp. We crossed the bridge and proceeded to try a new trail, the Forest Exploration Trail, which we thought would be a nice leisure “post ride” ride. It was anything but as we trudged up a long gravel road to the top of a “mountain”. Just as we got to the top we found we still had a ways to go. The Forest Exploration Trail is just that, a trail that you explore the history of the area with abandoned homesites and placards of information on the forest and trees we continued down the back side of the hill and biked through a creek and back to the bridge and starting point. I’ll definitely be back to ride this trail.

It was a great way to end the day as we this trail was another 2.28 miles, for a total of 7 miles of riding in about 90 minutes. It was pretty strenuous in a few places but it was great exercise
