From the trailhead, we'll follow the trail through 3 miles of old growth Redwood forest to Fern Falls, a small waterfall, and then hike back the way we came in. The hike itself isn't too
Contact hike organizer for details but the trailhead is off Howland Hill Road in Jedediah Smith State Park northeast of Cresent City.
There's something about hiking in Redwood forests that always make me think that I'm an extra in a Jurassic Park movie. The Redwoods, towering hundreds of feet above, give the forest a ethereal, primeval aspect.
On this hike, we started early enough to beat the minivans of families that we saw on the way back out and thus had most of the trail to ourselves. It's an easy hike due to minimal elevation gain/loss, so we were in/out in about three hours.
Once away from the trailhead, hikers are rewarded with acres and acres of Redwood trees, babbling brooks, and lots of clover, fern, and poison oak.
At the end of the trail is Fern Falls, a small waterfall.
All in all a great few hours in the wonderful Pacific Redwood forests.
