Kevin Murphy Interview
How old were you when you first went hiking and who took you? How did it turn out?
I have always been an avid hiker since Junior High School when I was a member of the school hiking club.
What draws you to hiking and the greater outdoors in general?
I love the camaraderie on the trail and the majestic beauty of nature.
To date, what is the hardest outdoor adventure you've had to tackle, and why?
The hardest trip I've ever been on is ANY hike with Steve Backhaus. Even if we start in pristine weather by the end of the end of it we are leaving the trail in torrential downpours...no exaggeration.
What outdoor tip would you give to members?
My one tip for hikers is to always carry a flashlight. I have been on hikes when we expected to leave the trail way before sunset only to find ourselves racing to get out of the forest before it gets dark. Finding yourself on a trail in the dark without a light is scary stuff.
What is your favorite trail snack?
My favorite snack on the trail is GORP [good 'ole raisins and peanuts].
What is your favorite national park or forest, and why?
My favorite National Park so far has to be Torres Del Paine National Park in Chile. All I have to say is WOW! It is at the end of the world but the whole experience is just so amazing and yes, it did rain one day because I was on a hike with Steve Backhaus. The grey glacier located in the national park is breathtaking.
What is your favorite outdoor retail shop and why?
My favorite outdoors retailer is a family owned business in Northhampton, MA called Don Gleasons. I like the store because it is family owned and operated. From shopping there for years I have a personal rapport with the owner. Nice people.
Which of these do you use to navigate: compass, GPS, topo map, trail map?
I usually use a trail map when I hike but for the first time last weekend my friend had his phone and we used Google Earth to find our way while snowshoeing. It worked out real well.
What outdoor activities do you like besides hiking?
Besides hiking I enjoy skiing, biking and going to firing ranges.
Which piece of outdoor gear/clothing have you most recently bought?
The last piece of outdoor clothing I bought was yet another neck gaiter because I forgot it with my ski equipment so now I only have about a dozen or so if anyone needs one let me know!
