Joe Poole Interview
When did you first start hiking, what prompted you to start, and how did it turn out? I've been hiking since I was an 8 year old kid growing up in the Sierra Nevada mountains in California. To go hiking all I had to do was walk out the front door. I got away from it for a number of years, but when I moved to the Washington DC area last year, I met some friends who brought me back to it. I wasn't sure if I could get back into it, but once I started getting out on the trail I was hooked again.
What is your one of your favorite hiking places and why? One of the places I love to go hiking is Section A of the Billy Goat Trail on the Maryland side of Great Falls. Despite being crowded, it's relatively close by, provides a great workout, and you get to see the beautiful Mather Gorge. Tibbet Knob is a favorite, too, because it's secluded, though a couple hours' drive away. If you could hike with any famous person for a day [dead or alive], who would you pick? I'd have to say Mark Twain. I'm not a big talker myself, but I do love listening to intelligent and interesting people talk about philosophy, politics, and life in general. Mark Twain seems like one of those people whose no-nonsense and super common-sensical logic and points-of-view would keep me captivated for hours upon hours. Do you shoot pictures with a digital or film camera? Digital. If you have a long weekend, where do you typically go? Shenandoah or George Washington National Forest.
Do you prefer to save up for one big yearly trip, or take multiple shorter trips? I like taking multiple shorter trips so I can get out more frequently.
What is the most significant gear invention? Hydration packs. So easy and so essential.
Your best advice for the great outdoors is... Just get out and do it. Don't wait for someone to invite you. Get out and create adventures on your own.
