Mike Robert Interview

When did you first start hiking, what prompted you to start, and how did it turn out?
I started hiking when I was in the Boy Scouts in upstate New York.  We had a blast camping, hiking, and canoeing all over the Adirondacks.  Later I joined my high school hiking club and did a lot of day hikes in the Adirondacks.

What is your one of your favorite hiking places and why?
Baxter State Park, it's beautiful and no crowds.

If you could hike with any famous person for a day [dead or alive], who would you pick?
Bette Davis;  I bet she'd be a hoot!

Do you shoot pictures with a digital or film camera?
Digital.

When you have a long weekend where would you typically go?
Either skiing, hiking or visiting my parents in upstate New York, or I stay home and work on my run down old house.

Do you prefer to save up for one big yearly trip, or take multiple shorter trips?
I prefer taking multiple shorter trips.  I like to spread out my vacation time.

What's your dream destination?
I don't really have one.  I think I'd like to try touring & camping on Prince Edward Island.

Where do you plan to travel next year?
I don't have any definite travel plans for next year.  Some skiing in New Hampshire and Vermont maybe and in the summer I'd like to go camping in the Adirondacks or at Baxter State Park.  And definitely day-hikes in the White Mountains.

What is your favorite type of lodging?
Either a luxury hotel or a tent (none of that in-between stuff).  Or better yet, a free sofa at a friend's seaside house... is the best kind of lodging!

What do you do to enhance your outdoor fitness?
I run and lift weights at least 4 times a week.

What is the most significant gear invention?
I like the head lamp.  Also comes in handy when I'm painting my house after dark.

Your best advice for the great outdoors is...
Always bring enough clothes and food and gloves.  It's just no fun being cold and hungry.
