Doug Interview

What is your favorite place that you have been to on the planet?

I lived in East Africa for four years and had some incredible outdoor experiences, but you know, New England is pretty hard to beat for natural beauty.

You're most likely to plan an outdoor excursion around what type of activity?

Hiking all seasons.

Do you shoot pictures with a digital or film camera?

Camera? What camera? I used to shoot with film, but after having two cameras stolen decided just to enjoy experiences as they happen. Maybe after I get a job I'll invest in        another camera, probably digital. Until then, I'll continue to rely on others' great photos.

When you have a long weekend where would you typically go?

The Green Mountains of Vermont. I love the White Mountains in New Hampshire, but for me the Whites are more like a fling , while the Greens are kind of like friends with whom I want to spend most of my time.

Do you prefer to save up for one big yearly trip, or take multiple shorter trips?

Multiple, shorter trips.

What's your dream destination?

I have never been to South America and would love to hike in the Andes, but this won't be happening anytime soon.  I have also wanted for some time to do a road trip to Alaska, but since the last presidential campaign, I 've been a bit put off by the idea!

When travelling, do you choose your destination more for cultural discovery or to enjoy your favorite outdoor pursuit?

I think they go together. I like travel to wilderness areas and I usually plan trips around a particular activity (hiking, camping, biking), but to the extent that the culture of an area is tied to the landscape, it becomes an integral part of the trip.

Where do you plan to travel next year?

I don't have any travel plans, but I have a goal to complete New Hampshire's 48 4000 footers while I am still 48 years old:  "48 in 48".

What is your favorite type of lodging?

When I was younger, I loved a tent - or better yet a sleeping bag in a hammock strung between two trees in the woods. These days, a remote cabin is probably more my thing. I don't mind hauling water or stoking a fire as long as there is a soft place to sleep. A rustic lodge with a fireplace and good coffee would be a good second choice.

When making travel decisions, how important are environmental concerns? If very important, what are your standards?

I like to think that I am environmentally conscious, but have to admit that I haven't really thought alot about the environmental impact of my outdoor travels. Maybe now I will.

What do you do to enhance your outdoor fitness?

What is the most significant gear invention?

I don't know alot about gear, but I think synthetic fabrics have done a lot to transform the way we travel outdoors - in everything from clothing and boots to tents and packs.

Your indispensable travel tip is...

Pack light, pack smart, and be flexible: it's all part of the adventure.

I try to eat nutritious food and avoid junk food.  I'm not a diet fanatic (chocolate, chips, and beer are on my list of acceptable foods), but I do feel better and have more energy for outdoor activities when I eat right.
