Biking the Presidio Loop
On numerous trips to San Francisco in the past several years, I found the Presidio to be ideal for daily fitness cycling or just a leisurely ride within the city limits.
I prefer this former army facility to the better known Golden Gate Park because of slightly hillier terrain and considerably less traffic (both recreational and auto). And the views of the mouth of San Francisco Bay and the Golden Gate Bridge are breathtaking.
Roads within the Presidio are encased by stands of prolific eucalyptus trees that create a floral tunnel with a wonderful scent. These roads were used for an exciting 75-mile circuit race in the 1987 Coors Bicycle Classic.
If you travel to San Francisco without your bicycle, you can rent one (even a tandem) at a number of local bike shops.
Trip Planner
Route location: In San Francisco, west of the Marina area and just south of the Golden Gate Bridge.
Surface: Smooth paved streets with ample shoulder for cycling.
Distance: 6.0 miles for one lap through this former Army post.
Ride time: Allow 30 minutes per revolution.
Difficulty: Easy. There are several short hills. If you push yourself and ride multiple laps, this is sensational urban fitness terrain.
Cycling in San Francisc Riding in the city is not as difficult as you might imagine if you stay away from the famously steep hills. To reach the Presidio from downtown, use the Embarcadero and other more level streets along the bay on the north side of the city. Courtesy of Great Outdoors.com
