Copy/Repost Hike

Eight men spent a week in August at Alamitos Canyon Retreat, an off-grid lodge on 150-plus acres of quiet high country outside Pecos, New Mexico. The week held what it promised — mountain trails, New Mexican cooking, Men's Circle, and a full day soaking at Ojo Caliente. It also asked for flexibility. The lightning-caused Frijoles Fire grew from a few hundred acres to more than 8,000 during our stay, closing roads and taking the high alpine routes off the table. The group handled it well: fire report over coffee each morning, the day's hike chosen together. We walked the creek up to the caves on Cave Creek Trail, put in easy miles along the Pecos River, and started most mornings straight out the Lodge door into Alamitos Canyon. What men took home was Glorieta Baldy summit and hiking from the property in Santa Fe National Forest. Due to the fire we were unable to backpack overnight to the 12k" Lake Katherine point of interest.  It was the food, community, vistas running for miles, a night sky dark enough to see the Milky Way clearly, and a group that stayed supportive and communicative while the plan changed daily.
