RESCHEDULED FROM SUNDAY THE 11TH DUE TO RAIN; MONDAY FORECASTED TO BE DRY AFTER DAWN WITH SUN FROM LATE MORNING, SOME DAMP AND MUDDY SECTIONS POSSIBLE. Loop hike starting at Canopus Lake in
Route 301 runs through Fahnestock State Park which lies between the Taconic State Parkway and route 9. Parking for this hike is next to Canopus Lake which route 301 goes by. Park by the lake right across from the Three Lakes Trailhead, or if that is full just a bit further west in the Appalachian Trail Southbound trailhead parking lot. We'll meet at the Three Lakes Trailhead.
Lovely day for a hike. Started with some local fog but sun quickly came out as forecasted and it was perfect hiking weather. Five lakes and ponds, marshes, beaver dams, 4-5 stream crossings, some up and down low ridges on the AT and flat easy hiking on about half the trails. After the intense rain the day before (which required postponing this hike by one day) the streams and waterfalls were really lively and required some careful rock hop crossings although the trails generally were not muddy. We only had to detour once where the trail's stream crossing was too deep and flooded, but that added to the adventure. Falls colors were nice although not yet at peak. At our return junction going back onto the AT we met a through hiker who was doing a 500-mile section of the AT and had started at Mr. Greylock, MA. The hike ended up being 8 miles and took us just over 4 hours including all our snacking and photo stops.
