Summary

This is a relatively easy trail and a longtime favorite. The complete round trip is approximately 20 miles, about a 2- to 2-1/2-hour ride at a moderate pace of 9-12 mph. If you haven't biked in a while, this is a good trail to get you moving again. The trail passes through woodlands, over bridges, and beside beaver wetlands, particularly around Windham. The trail features the 1849 granite archway and the rehabilitated Windham Depot, which serves as a rest area. The Salem-Derry-Windham rail trail corridor in southern New Hampshire is a relatively flat, paved, multi-use path, featuring a gentle incline of roughly 88 to 358 feet of elevation gain when traveling north from Salem toward Derry making the ride back a little easier. The trail offers an easy grade designed for walking and biking. Bring snack if you like, to have at Hood Park in Derry and water. NOTE: As a courtesy, be prepared to walk your bike when we get to Sabatino's Italian Restaurant in Derry, as they may have outside diners seated close to the trail. It is posted to walk your bike. Alternatively, just turn off the trail onto the short road leading to the crosswalk at RT 102. Ride Breakdown: Old Tuscan Market to B&M Caboose at Windham Junction: 6 miles Old Tuscan Market to Hood Park: 9.5 miles Bathrooms/Outhouses: Mid-way along the trail, near the Windham Depot; and at the end of the trail, at Hood Park. Safety Note: Bike helmets are recommended. IMPORTANT: Be sure your bike is in good working order! Tires should be in good shape and pumped up, gears should shift smoothly, and your brakes should be properly adjusted. If possible, pack a spare tube in case of a flat. A hand pump or CO2 inflator is also desirable, trip leader will have a portable compressor.
