Summary

This will be yet another amazing trip on the spectacular and untrammeled Downeast Coast of Maine. Many consider the scenic coastal hiking on this area to be Acadia National Park without its endless crowds. Our two full days, Sat. (July 18) and Sun. (July 19), will be centered on some of the most incredible hikes on this part of the coast. On Sat., we'll tackle the steep ascent of Tunk Mountain (1157 ft.) via a 4.5 mile partial loop trail. From the top of Tunk, there are stunning vistas of the surrounding mountains, lakes, the Acadia skyline and the open ocean. On a clear day we'll even be able to see all the way to Mt. Katahdin! Returning from our hike, we'll stop at the beautiful Roque Bluffs Beach State Park for a walk along this rare, sandy Maine beach. The daredevils will even have a chance to dive into the bone-chilling waters! On Sun., we'll head up to the Bold Coast for for a hike on the Bold Coast Trail in the Cutler Coast Public Reserved Land. This is arguable the best hike on the Downeast Maine coast! The 5.5 mile loop trail (Black Point Loop) will take us along steep, spruce-clad cliffs with spectacular, breathtaking views of the open ocean (and maybe a few whales and seals!). There are many pocket coves and cobble beaches here and we can explore one, at Black Point, accessable via a log ladder. The trail winds back through a beautiful Acadian forest.

This will definitely be a fun and memorable trip. I can recommend reasonably-priced accommodations (including Hipcamp sites) for your stay in Machiasport/Machias for the three nights (7/17, 7/18, 7/19). The first night, we'll all meet at my house in Machiasport (see directions) for a pizza dinner and schmoozing. If you have any questions, please be sure to give me a shout!

Directions To Trailhead Parking Lot

We will all meet at my house in Machiasport, which is located on Machias Bay. The goal is to meet there around 6:00 p.m. on Fri., July 17th. The house is located on Port Rd. (Rt. 92) in Machiasport, Maine. Here are the directions: Take I-95 North through Maine to Bangor. In Bangor, take Exit 182A to merge onto I-395E toward US 1A/Bangor/ME-9/Brewer. Take Exit 6A for Rt. 1A East, toward Coastal Route/Rt. 1/Ellsworth/Bar Harbor. Take Rt. 1A approx. 25 miles to Ellsworth. In Ellsworth, take a left onto Rt. 1 North. Take Rt. 1 North for 58 miles to Machias. In Machias, take a right at the bottom of College Hill (before crossing the bridge over the Machias River) onto Rt. 92 (Elm St.). Take Rt. 92 for 2.9 miles to my house on the left, a small cottage right on Machias Bay. Once you sign up for the trip, I will share the street number with you so you can GPS it.
