This rugged trail features expansive vistas with breathtaking views of the Wassel Reservoir, as well as rocks to sit on to take in the views and beautiful fall colors. Come in the winter for snowshoeing. The blue and red loop is more rocky than the orange trail, but features rock formations, vernal pools, epic cliff face views, and a cool waterfall. Nearby rock climbing destinations like Owl’s Lair, Fox Den, and May Crack Block are available for those interested as well.
A portion of this popular hiking route follows the Metacomet Trail / New England Scenic Trail. Ownership of the land is a bit complex, as it is shared by the state, Berlin Land Trust, and two towns. What sets Ragged Mountain apart from its neighboring traprock cliffs, though, is its solitude. Central and Southern Connecticut is full of great parks, hiking trails and awesome overlooks, but this one seems quieter, despite the fact that the trailhead is in a suburban neighborhood. Pay close attention to the map, it is easy to stray off the main trail.
Note- this hike is cross posted with GIKERS, a CT LGBTQ meetup group.
The main trailhead for Ragged Mountain Memorial Preserve is located at 438 West Lane, Berlin, CT 06037. The area is best accessed via Route 71 (Chamberlain Hwy) or Route 364. Parking is available on West Lane, with additional options at nearby locations like Timberlin Park if the main lot is full.
