By New Hampshire 4K peak standards, the Dicey's Mill Trail to the summit of Mt. Passaconaway (4019 ft) is considered moderate at 8.9 miles with 2900 elevation gain. It’s a pleasant and popular hike. The trail is well maintained, but like most peaks in the White Mountains, the last stretch of trail leading to the summit is rocky. Passaconaway has a wooded summit but there is a nearby outlook with great views. https://www.alltrails.com/trail/us/new-hampshire/mount-passaconaway-via-diceys-mill-trail We’ll send out trail/weather conditions by mid week if we are a go or no go. Have all your typical hiking gear - sturdy hiking boots, at least 2 liters of water, lunch, snacks, bug spray, appropriate clothing and maybe a head net if you are particularly sensitive to flying things. There are a few manageable water crossings (unless there is a lot of heavy rainfall before the hike day, we’ll keep an eye on it) and at this point in May we should be done with snow and spikes. Mt. Passaconaway is 42nd highest peak in New Hampshire. Please be in good hiking shape for this one, as the pace will be moderate.
Parking for the Dicey's Mill Trail to Mt. Passaconaway is located at the Ferncroft Road parking lot in Wonalancet, NH. We’ll meet at the lot. WJ7R+HX Wonalancet, Albany, NH Parking is free but strictly limited to this designated lot and a specific section of the access road, with no parking allowed on Ferncroft Road itself to avoid tickets/towing. The lot holds roughly 35 cars but we should be ok based on the month and start time. For first timers please note we don’t want the Ferncroft trailhead but will walk in the other direction leaving the lot, taking a right on Ferncroft Road and following the gravel road and signs for the Dicey's Mill trailhead, which begins past a private residence at the end of the road. Additional Directions: Route 16 North, until the Chocorua region. 113 West, until Tamworth, then Route 113A until the trailhead. Parking area 1/2 miles on a road to the right. From 93N take exit 24 to Route 3 to Holderness, turn left on Route 113, drive 11.5 miles along Squam Lake, stay on Route 113 thru Center Sandwich, in 3.7 miles continue straight onto 113A for 6.6 miles to the left on Ferncroft Road. Parking area 1/2 miles on a road to the right.
