Summary

Join me for this 8.6-mile hike up to the open summits of Giant Mountain (4627') and Rocky Peak Ridge (4420').  We'll be taking the Zander Scott Trail (ADK #48) up to the summit of Giant and then the East Trail (ADK #112) over to Rocky Peak.  The initial trail is moderate in grade, while the descent into the col between Giant and Rocky Peak is very steep.  Some of the footing is difficult.  Giant, from its first overlook to its summit, provides  outstanding views of the Great Range, Nippletop and Dial, the Dix Range, Porter and Cascade.  It is one of the more dramatic peaks in the park.  Rocky Peak Ridge provides worthwhile views of Giant's eastern face and slides.  There is also a very interesting view further east along the East Trail which includes Marie-Louise Pond and Bald Peak.  Lake Champlain is better seen from Rocky Peak Ridge than any other of the High Peaks.  We'll return via the same route...going back over Giant Mountain.  Total elevation gain is approximately 4040'.

What to Bring:  Typical summer/fall hiking gear should be appropriate:  shorts or convertible hiking pants, good sturdy hiking boots with thick socks and a windbreaker/rain gear (just in case).  Also bring along lunch, snacks and plenty of water (3-l is recommended).  Optionally, pack bug repellent and sunscreen and anything else you may require for a day hike.

After the Hike:  Afterwards, we'll cap off the day in the Keene Valley for something to eat, if there is sufficient interest.

NOTE:  Serious weather will cancel this hike.

Directions To Trailhead Parking Lot

Find the trailhead on the left (east) side of Rte 73 driving south.  Chapel Pond will be on your right.  Look for the trailhead sign on your left close to the road as you drive by the south end of Chapel Pond.  NOTE:  There is often limited space at these trailhead parking areas.  If a sufficient number of guys sign up, we will meet at one of the larger lots in the Keene Valley and carpool back to the parking area.
