SUMMARY:

The Franconia Ridge hike is one of the classic hikes of New England.  Most of the hike is on the exposed Alpine ridges between Mt. Lafayette and Mt. Little Haystack.  The open terrain allows for some of the most spectacular hikes in NH's White Mountains.  It is because of this that this is a very popular hike, and on summer weekends the trails can be quite crowded.  This hike is scheduled for a Wednesday, which hopefully will be less crowded, and allow for a more enjoyable experience.  So, if you can take the day off, please join me for this event.  The hike will follow the classic route:  up the Falling Waters Trail, across the Franconia Ridge Trail, down to Greenleaf Hut, and back down to the trailhead via the Bridle Path Trail.  The total mileage is close to 9 miles.  Some of the terrain is steep, and this will increase the difficulty of the hike.  Also the open ridges will leave you exposed to the elements, so proper gear is required.  At a minimum you need to bring sturdy hiking boots, quick drying synthetic clothes, a windbreaker/rain park & pants, a hat, a light fleece, sun glasses, and sunscreen.  Also you will need to bring at least two liters of water (you can refill at the Hut, but that comes towards the last third of the hike).  Also bring a lunch and snacks.  Inclement weather will cancel this event, as this trail can be quite dangerous when wet and windy.

Driving directions to the location and spot to meet at:

We will meet at the hiker's trailhead on the east side of I-93 across from Lafayette Campground.  If you are coming from the South on I-93, the trailhead will be immediately to your right when the road narrows down to one lane each way.  You will then see a big brown sign with an arrow directing you to take the ramp for the trailhead.  There is a fair amount of parking, and again this being a Wednesday, you should be able to find a good spot.  We will meet by the sign near the toilets.  If you are coming from the North, you can exit at the Campground and park there.  There is a pedestrian tunnel under I-93 which you can safely use to meet us at the designated meeting point.
