Which Compass To Buy?
By Suunto.
It is easy to get overwhelmed with the many compass types. The right one for you depends on your navigation skills and your activity. Also consider ease of use, size, weight and styling.
Your needs and price range affect the type of compass you buy. If you stick with a reputable brand, you are assured good product quality and warranty services in case of a defect. The compasses that you might find in a toy store are not designed for outdoor navigation. Remember that you are using this tool in case you get lost or to prevent you from getting lost. Trying to save a couple of dollars is not worth spending that cold night out.
Which compass should I buy?
The more comfortable you are with your compass, the better your results. Do not confuse yourself with all of the high-tech gadgets, or items that look cool. Buy what you need.
- Price: A simple $15 compass will do almost everything that a $60 compass will do; the pricier unit gives you greater ease of use and accuracy.
- Type of trip: Consider how much time you spend in the backcountry and the type of trips you are taking.
- Will you be going on trips that require cross-country travel? If so, you want to consider mirrored or sighting compasses since you will be taking a lot of bearings.
- Will you be traveling at night? Then a luminous model will be the right choice for you.
- Is there the possibility of storm or whiteout conditions? If this is the case you want a compass that is loaded with all the features you might need: luminous, mirrored, clinometer and a separate altimeter.
- If you are not sure, consider purchasing a simple compass in your price range and learn how to use it first. After using your compass for a time, determine whether or not you need to upgrade. You probably won't.
