Interview with Eli Segev

Tell us about your outdoors experience.

I grew up on a lake, which meant swimming in the summer and rowing in the spring and fall.  As a teenager I did hiking with the Boy Scouts.  When I moved to Boston, I learned how ski - this is something that I can look forward to in the winter.  My introduction to downhill skiing was with Chiltern, when a group formed to take ski lessons at the Nashoba Ski area.  In the summer I go between the ocean and the mountains of New England, swimming, kayaking and hiking.

How much do you like to outdoor recreation? Are you in love with it? If so...when did you fall in love and where?

As an urban person I find that it is absolutely necessary to leave town and go out to nature in all seasons and do any activity that is appropriate to the season.  It is good to the soul.

If you knew someone who was thinking of starting outdoor recreation, what advice would you give them?

Start small and don't try to do anything too ambitious in the beginning.  You will find your bearing and your strength and figure out what you likeBring a friend along.

What was your first GO excursion? How did it turn out?

I think that my first GO excursion was to the Zealand Falls in the White Mountains.  It was a spectacular Fall hike.

What do you like about GayOutdoors?

I like the range of events offered by GO and the people that I meet.

Describe Massachusetts to our outdoorzy members who’ve never been there? Is there a lot to do if you are an outdoor enthusiast?

Massachusetts has a lot to offer to an outdoorzy person for every season.  It has great green spaces to hike, streams, rivers and the ocean to kayak and swim.

What is your wish list for adventure travel and why?

It is a long list of places to visit and do different things.  I just don't have the budget.  I think that I would start with the Canadian Maritime Provinces, where I have never been, and do hiking in the summer.

What is your favorite thing to do a perfect summer day?

Hike to a beautiful pond and go skinny dipping in the pond.

If you could spend the day on the trail with one person, living or dead, it would be…

I don't know his name - he is always there in the gym :-)
