South Coast by train and bike.
Region: New England Activity Type: Road Cycling Place: Fairhaven and environs, MA
Today, I took the train from Boston to New Bedford and biked to Sconticut Neck in Fairhaven. I made a few mistakes, but I feel that I have learned. It was mostly pleasant, except for a few hot-rodders and carrying my bike down stairs. I went on the "Phoenix Rail Trail, and could have continued on to the Mattapoisett Rail Trail. If I had a group, I would have stayed another 3 hours and caught the next train home and gone all the way to "West Island State Reservation," which looks potentially lovely, with a nice sea breeze. On Fridays in summer the train is free; on weekends it's cheap.
I am open to doing the trip on a Friday, but we would need to keep track of which trains on weekdays allow bikes on the train.
We'd be traveling against the commute, so no problem with bikes-on-train hours. Actually, I looked at the schedule just now -- all trains allow bikes. I guess the line is not near capacity yet.
