Trip Report/Photos from JDNnh
The forecast looked great for a Friday hike in The White Mountains of NH. Mike and I decided on Bald Peak - a 2464 foot mountain with parking located in Easton, NH. Because the mountain is moderate in size and only 4.6 miles round trip there was no need to wake up at dawn.
We drove up 93 through the Franconia Notch then turned into Sugarhill then Easton, NH. The ride was beautiful with blue sky and plenty of snow capped mountains to gaze upon.
After parking the truck we put on micro-spikes and hand warmers. It was a brisk 25 degrees and we warmed up on the ascent. We passed numorous brooks, streams, cascades and even a 25 foot waterfall. Ice coated the rocks and top of the water.
After entering a thick hemlock forest we saw the sign for Bald Peak. It was pointed right onto a less used trail. We picked up the pace and in 15 minutes left the dark forest for sun splashed granite ledges with epic views south and west. So many peaks to gaze upon - the mighty MT Moosilauke commanded the most attention with its immense bulk.
We found a large boulder to sit on and have a quick lunch. We had the whole summit to ourselves. The wind picked up so we decided to hi-tail it back into the woods and begin a quick enjoyable descent back to our truck.
Bald Peak is a fantastic peak that requires half a day with travel time. The perfect outdoorsy fix in the winter.
