This will most definitely be an exciting few days on the wild, spectacular and untrammeled Downeast Coast of Maine! For our two full days, Sat. (7/19) and Sun. (7/20), we'll experience two of the most scenic hikes on this undiscovered part of the coast. On Sat. (7/18), we'll drive up to Campobello Island in Canada, a short drive over from Lubec, Maine. We will all need passports for this! On Campobello, we'll hike the scenic 5.5 mile Liberty Point loop trail skirting rockbound cliffs and coves, likely spotting bald eagles, seals and whales along the way! There's even a cool (literally!) fog forest to experience. That afternoon, we'll walk out to the East Quoddy Head Lighthouse at the northern tip of Campobello, one of the most picturesque on the Atlantic seaboard - and only accessible at low tide. On Sun. (7/19), we will hike what many consider the most spectacular trail along the whole Maine coast - the Bold Coast Trail in remote, picturesque Cutler. This 5.5-mile loop trail has breathtaking ocean views rivaling those of California's Big Sur coast. The scenery is beyond spectacular there - towering, plunging sea cliffs, crashing surf, magnificent spruce trees, pocket coves with cobble beaches, whale watching and peat bogs - all be part of this extraordinary hike. On Monday (7/20) there is an exciting option to take a 2-hours boat trip from Steuben out to remote Petit Manan Island Wildlife Refuge. There we'll be able to see the unusual puffin colony and observe these striking, rare sea birds (including their chicks!) - along with viewing the dramatic lighthouse. The cost of this boat trip is $75 each, and if you'd like to go, I can assist you with buying the ticket. This will absolutely be a fun and really memorable trip! I can recommend reasonably-priced accommodations for your stay in the Machiasport/Machias area (including Hipcamp sites) for the three nights (7/17, 7/18, 7/19). The first night (Fri., 7/17), we'll all meet at 6:00 pm at my cottage in Machiasport (see directions) for a pizza dinner and socializing on my deck overlooking beautiful Machias Bay. The other two nights we'll also get together for dinner, including a cookout at my place. There will be a very small donation requested for the two dinners at my cottage ($8-10/night). If you have any questions whatsoever, please be sure to give me a shout!
We'll meet at my cottage in Machiasport, Maine (on Machias Bay) on Friday, July 17th at 6:00 pm. The cottage is located at 264 Port Road (Rt. 92), Machiasport, ME. You can get there via your GPS, and here are the directions: Take I-95 North through Maine to Bangor. In Bangor, take Exit 182A to merge into I-395E toward US 1A/Bangor/ME-9/Brewer. Take Exit 6A for Rt. 1A East, toward Route 1/Ellsworth/Bar Harbor. Take Route 1A for 25 miles to Ellsworth. In Ellsworth, take a left onto Rt. 1 North. Take Rt. 1 North for 58 miles to Machias. In Machias, take a right at the bottom of College Hill (before crossing the bridge over the Machias River) onto Rt. 92 (Ames Ave.). Take Rt. 92 for 3.3 miles to my cottage, on the left at #264 Port Road (Rt. 92) in Machiasport, Maine.

Thanks Ed! Got your mail. I will see if I can secure the lodging. Thanks again! -Justin
Hi jcinmass - a big welcome aboard for the Maine Coast Adventure trip! I believe you will be able to find accommodations in Machias. This is the town up the road a few miles from my cottage in Machiasport. I will separately message you via GO with a list of options for lodging, and I hope that will work out for you. Thanks - Ed
Hi Albacc! Again - glad you can make it for this fun and exciting trip! So on Saturday, we'll be going to Campobello Island in Canada, about a 45 minute drive from my cottage. Saturday morning at 8:30 am, we'll meet at my cottage in Machiasport (address and directions coming to everyone tonight), carpool there and leave soon after for the drive to Campobello. We will all need passports for this! I hope that helps - and more info to come tonight in a group message. Thanks - Ed
Hello, I just saw this event after returned from an oversea trip. I probably won't arrive until late Friday night. Wondering if you can recommend some options for lodging, so I can see if I can make it there on time for the event? Thanks in advance and sorry for a last minute inquiry.
Really looking forward to joining this trip. Your description of the trails was so convincing. See you Saturday. What time and location for Saturday morning? Vincent (bf) and I will be driving from Boston to Maine on Friday evening after I get out of work
