Summary

THE UPDATED PLAN

*UPDATED MEETING TIME 7:45AM, ON TRAIL BY 8AM*

We will meet at the 19 mile brook trailhead; there is roadside parking area. We will hike up 19 mile brook trail to Carter Notch Hut. From there, depending on time, energy, and conditions, those who are interested can attempt the ascent up to Wildcat A from the hut (.7 each way but quite steep), while others can rest at the hut or turn back. Carter Notch Hut is open in winter. If we're really feeling adventurous and there's time, we can continue from Wildcat A along wildcat ridge trail all the way to Wildcat D before returning to the hut and descending the 19 mile brook trail.

Distances:

Hut and back is 7.2 miles

Adding Wildcat A is 8.6 miles

To Wildcat D and back is 12.4 miles

We can decide as a group how we want to manage this "build your own adventure" experience, so please keep in mind your own capacity and what feels safest and most enjoyable to you. The whole route is out-and-back so turning around is always an option.

Please arrive by 7:45am. We will be leaving the parking lot at 8am. Daylight is short with sunset at 4:13pm so bring a headlamp just in case.

We will be hiking in winter conditions at a moderate pace. There will be ice and snow. MicroSpikes or Hillsounds Crampons are mandatory and we may need snowshoes if there is a recent snowstorm. If you don’t own a pair of snowshoes, you can always rent them from your local outdoor gear shop.

Please have the appropriate gear/clothing to hike this time of year and the appropriate amount of layers to keep your core body warm. We recommend WINTER hiking boots, MicroSpikes, poles, wool hat, gloves, hand warmers, toe warmers, rain/wind/snow gear, warm layers, HEADLAMP and NO COTTON. Carry at least 2 liters of water, lunch and snacks.

Please arrive by 7:45am. We will be leaving the parking lot at 8am.

Hikers can stay at my house in Sugar Hill NH before and/or after the hike if desired. (House is about 50 minutes from trailhead.)
