Summary

Come on along for a sure-to-be spectacular fall foliage through the always scenic Arnold Arboretum.  Beginning at the main entrance, our hike will take us throughout the entire preserve for about 4.5 miles.  To get us revved up for scary Halloween time, we'll visit some spooky sites, including Hemlock Hill, where we might sense the spirits of the lost souls from the 19th century Bussey Woods murders, then we'll wander through the ancient burying ground with its eerie, crumbling stones and the graves of 18th century smallpox victims.  But all that spookiness aside, the Arboretum is a 300-acre treasure run by Harvard University on land owned by the City of Boston.  It's a National Historic Landmark, and it's one of the finest examples of landscape design by Frederick Law Olmsted.  Please wear your good hiking shoes & warm layed clothes and bring a water and a snack (if you'd like to).  After composing oursleves following the spooky & scenic hike, we'll head over to the nearby & lively Jamaica Plain center where we can schmooze over an early dinner at a local eatery.  Steady rain cancels.

Directions To Trailhead Parking Lot

We'll meet at 1:00 pm at the main entrance to the Arnold Arboretum at 125 Arborway, Boston, MA 02130.  You can use that address for Google Maps and GPS.  There is some free parking is free along the main road (Arborway), but you may have to park in the adjacent neighborhood across the Arborway.  It's a 10 minute walk from the Forest Hills Station of the MBTA's Orange Line.  We'll meet on the road area directly in front of the brick Hunnewell Visitor Center Building, which is just inside the main gate at the right.

Thank you Ed, never a dull moment! Great seeing everyone again, but a certain nomad was missing. Welcome to the newbies!

nhclimber03264 Posted Oct 22, 2021 at 6:54 PM

Arnold Arboretum has 281 acres, I am sure you will find a few wise ones!

Russell Posted Oct 22, 2021 at 6:42 PM

Ed, do you expect we might run into any wiseacres on this hike?

emsinjp Posted Oct 22, 2021 at 3:59 PM

Hi Guys - just wanted to touch base with you about tomorrow's Arboretum hike. We are in luck! The weather forecast changed over the last couple of days, and tomorrow will be a perfect fall day - partly sunny and 58-60 degrees. :-) Looking forward to seeing you tomorrow at the AA! Ed

Bunny? I can bring my pet bunny? His name is "pokie" short for slow pokie.Oh this is wonderful. Ed you are the best.

emsinjp Posted Oct 20, 2021 at 10:54 PM

In answer to our two wiseacres, we will be scaling two of the highest peaks in Boston and crossing the wide and (minorly) cascading Bussey Brook, so they (and not you!) will need will need all of their gear for this (bunny) urban wilderness adventure! ??

nhclimber03264 Posted Oct 19, 2021 at 5:47 PM

Ed is high water going to be an issue? Would you recommend flippers, snorkel, mask and floaties? Just checking, need to be sure to bring the right gear!

vwgreg Posted Oct 17, 2021 at 7:44 PM

Ed, what is the elevation gain we'll experience on Mount Arnold.?

nhclimber03264 Posted Oct 17, 2021 at 1:41 PM

Ed will I need my micro spikes and long underwear for this wilderness adventure?
