Summary

It’s still winter up high! Mount Madison [5366 ft.] is in the Presidential Range with a sharp alpine summit with terrific views! Views include the Great Gulf and Mount Washington, Carter-Moriah Range and peaks further north. Total mileage using Valley Way is 8.6 miles and elevation gain of 4,050 ft.

Before reaching the summit we’ll see come across the Madison Hut which a popular stop for a break and prepare for the final half mile push above treeline to the summit.

What to wear/bring: MicroSpikes and snowshoes are required due to the soft, spring snow further up. We may not need snowshoes at the start so you should be prepared to strap your snowshoes onto your pack using bungee cords. Wear warm clothing suitable for the exposed ledge and summit(s)...no cotton or blue jeans. You should also have insulated winter boots suitable for the season. Additionally, bring a headlamp/flashlight. Bring along plenty of water (at least 2 liters), lunch, snacks and anything else you may require for a day hike.

Afterwards: Everyone is welcome to join us back at our house in Waterville Valley to relax by our fireplace [BYOB and bring snacks] followed by one of Jon's delicious dinners. We ask $10 per person to help pay for our food costs. Showers are available so bring a change of clothing to make your visit with us more comfortable.

Lodging Option: Bunk beds are available at our house near Waterville Valley, NH for Friday and Saturday night for $25 per night. Coffee/bagels each morning and linen/blankets/towels are provided. We have limited space in the fridge to store your beverages/food so it's best to bring a small cooler. Space is limited so email me ASAP to reserve a bunk!

Directions To Trailhead Parking Lot

Follow New Hampshire Route 16 north thorough Pinkham Notch to the town of Gorham and turn left [west] on U.S. Highway 2. The large Appalachia Trailhead parking area is on the left [south] side of the highway about 6 miles west of Gorham. We'll be driving a blue Toyota Tacoma truck.

Or take I-93 North, then U.S Highway 3 North, and then New Hampshire Route 115. Turn right [east] on U.S. Highway 2 and drive about 12 miles [more or less] to the large Appalachia Trailhead parking area on the right [south] side of the highway. We'll be driving a blue Toyota Tacoma truck.
